The move-out cleaning checklist that actually gets deposits back
Move-out cleaning is judged differently than normal cleaning. An inspector is not looking at whether the home feels clean — they are opening drawers, checking inside appliances and running a finger along the top of a door frame. This is the list, in the order it is worth doing.

Kitchen — where inspections are won or lost
More deposit disputes start in the kitchen than anywhere else in the home, because appliance interiors are the easiest thing to skip and the first thing checked.
- Inside the oven, including the door glass and racks
- Inside and behind the refrigerator, plus the drip tray area
- Inside every cabinet and drawer, including the backs
- Range hood, filter and backsplash degreased
- Sink, faucet, garbage disposal opening and cabinet floor beneath
- Countertops cleared and the space behind appliances reached where they pull out
Bathrooms
Bathrooms are the second inspection point and the one where buildup is hardest to remove at the last minute. Start these early rather than on moving day.
- Toilet including the base, bolts and behind the bowl
- Shower and tub, including tracks, doors and grout lines
- Mineral deposits on faucets and shower heads
- Mirrors, medicine cabinet interiors, vanity drawers and under-sink cabinet
- Exhaust fan cover and light fixtures
Everywhere else
With furniture gone, every surface is visible — which cuts both ways. The work is easier, and so is finding what was missed.
- Baseboards, door frames, doors and switch plates
- Closet shelves, rods and closet floors
- Window sills, tracks and interior glass where accessible
- Vents, ceiling fan blades and light fixtures
- Walls spot-cleaned for scuffs and marks
- Floors vacuumed and mopped last, after everything above is done
When to hire it out
An empty home cleans faster and more thoroughly than an occupied one, which is exactly why move-out cleaning is worth scheduling after the furniture is gone and before the final walk-through.
